Gochang is located along the southwestern border of the North Jeolla Province. Gochang holds the total area of 606.83งด, which constitutes 7.54% of the entire territory of the North Jeolla Province((8,050.94งด).? It is composed of 269.24งด of forests (44.37%), 236.68งด of dry and paddy fields (39.0%), and 100.91งดof other types of land. It is adjacent to Jeongeup and Buan to its northeast and to Jangseong and Younggwang to its southeast and to the West Wea to its northwest.

Gochang located in the southwestern Korean Peninsular is a continental climate, so winter is cold and dry under the influence of the Northwestern periodic wind in the winter and summer is hot and humid under the influence of the Southeastern periodic wind. In this reason various plants and animals grow and live in. ?The annual average temperature is 13.4กษ and the temperature range is highly variable the hottest being 27.4กษ in August and the coldest averaging around 0.9กษ in January.? Annual average precipitation amounts to 1,173.7mm. The most precipitation is shown in the summer, when the northern Pacific Ocean appears, while the lowest precipitation appears in winter.
Gochang boasts a wealth of relics from the ancient Korea that has been designated as cultural assets by UNESCO. Bordered to the west by the sea it is a central tourist attraction. It includes such attractions as the camellia flowers of Seonunsa Temple, the well-preserved Gochang Village Fortress, the home of Sin Jae-Hyo, the father of Pansori, and much more. Gochang is famous for its Bokbunja wine(Mountain Berry Liquor), and for its watermelon that can be found in the region, known for its sweetness and superb taste, and displayed every year in the Watermelon Festival. |
