Gimje-si is located to the west of the center part of Jeollabuk-do. It borders Wanjugun to the east on Noryeong Mountains, Jeongeup-si and Buan-gun to the south on Dongjin River, Iksan-si to the north on Mangyeong River and its river mouth and the western sea to the west. The mountains such as Guseon Mountain, Moak Mountain, Guksa-bong and Sangdu Mountain with the height of 500 ~ 700m are located from the northeast to the southwest.

Gimje stretches 41.6km from east to west, and 33.4km north to south making the area of 545.19§´, which is a vast area corresponding to 6.77% of the gross area of the North Jeolla Province(8,050.94§´ ). Within the total dimension, farmland area 283.35§´(51.97%), forest and field areas occupy 121.35§´ (22.26%), and the rest counts for 140.49§´(25.77%).

Gimje is developed around the down stream of both Mangyeong and Dongjin River. Agriculture and industries were developed around the Mangyeong and Dongjin River and the water of Mangyeong and Dongjin River has been used for agricultural and commercial water and people took the Mangyeong and Dongjin River valley as the grounds of living.

The city has four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. It is located in the mid-latitude temperate zone which has seasonal winds and the continental climate. The average annual temperature is between 14.1¡É. January (the coldest month) has an average temperature of between 9.2¡É and -6.1¡ÆC and August (the hottest month) average temperature is 27.4¡É.

As all of the main Korean transportation thoroughfares, including the Honam highway and Honam railroad lines, Gimje provides easy access from any area such as the national capital territory.

Gimje is the largest producer of rice in the country, endowed with picturesque scenery and numerous historical remains. A birthplace of rice farming, Gimje boasts the Byeokgolje, the biggest and oldest irrigation levee in East Asia.? The historical development of Korean agriculture can be traced in the Byeokgolje Museum of Irrigation.

In this homeland of agriculture, the broad plains harbor historical remains such as the Geumsansa Temple, a sacred ground of Maitreya Buddhism. Against the backdrop of the broad plains, a Horizon Festival is held each autumn, in which people can share the bountiful harvest and indulge in nostalgia for the old farming culture.

The famous Manghaesa Temple, blessed with beautiful surroundings, provides a vantage point in the closet position to the west coast. The unique view of the sunset over the ocean from Simpo Harbor takes one¡¯s breath away
